A soon as I started flying with my paramotor in 2003 I had my camera with me up in the air. Flying with an unobstructed view opened up a new world for me to photograph. When it was time to have another solo exhibition at PG Art Gallery a few years later it was only natural to feature my aerial work. "High Angle" was one of my most succesful shows. This gallery presents my favorite photographs from the "High Angle" series.
"Burc Beach" - If there is a coastline, we paramotor pilots love flying alongside it as the wind coming from the water is so smooth that one can fly all day long without encountering turbulent air. On such a day I captured this image of an off-season Black Sea beach having many compositional elements such as lines, texture, symmetry and pattern making it one of my most successful photographs. It was featured in National Geographic and Canon Europe Editor's Choice.
"Summer" - I was flying along the Marmara Sea in hot hot weather keeping my eyes open for interesting subjects. I saw this even distribution of people waist deep in the greenish blue water. They were oblivious to what was going on around and above them (me), but rather just cooling down and enjoying the summer. I had a winner minimalistic photo...
"Beach" - As I was approaching this crowded Black Sea beach I realized from far away that I had never seen it that crowded before. Quickly I aimed my telephoto lens and selected the part where most people were concentrated and captured a wall to wall texture of beachgoers, colored umbrellas, and the sand as the backdrop.
"Umbrellas" - Textures and patterns always catch my eye, especially so from directly above. How could I miss the many overlapping market umbrellas near Lake Egirdir. I love that there are basically three colors scattered randomly: Red, white and blue.
"Floats" - Tourists lazily sunbathing on their floats with comfortable personal spaces around them in crystal clear Mediterranean water form this serene image where the viewer's eyes move around "connecting the dots".
"Picnic" - When I saw this man on a ridge at the Black Sea coast I made a low pass above him and took just one shot. The photograph has all the ingredients of a local guy at a seaside picnic. I show this image at my seminars when explaining about information theory in photographic composition. When a local person sees the familiar details in the photograph he or she will know where it was taken, but the content will be unfamiliar and new to others. See if you can tell where it was shot.
"Green" - Photography is the art of selection! I always look for graphic details while photographing. I saw this detail and applied the art of selection when I was flying over the many golf courses in Belek at the Mediterranean Sea coast.
"Frozen" - Frozen water, ground, cracks, ripples, foot prints, and shades of earth tones on the surface of the Salt Lake make abstract art.
"Night Flight" - Our small group of paramotor pilots was returning to the landing zone. We were late and it was already very dark. I thought why not try and make a time-exposure. This is the result. You can see two of the paramotors in the air. Eventually we radioed our friends on the ground and told them to turn on the car headlights pointing to the direction of the landing path. We landed safely!
"People on Salt Lake" - People enjoy a leisurely stroll on the endless white salt flats of the Salt Lake.
"Boys" - While flying close to the ground at 25 mph I usually get one chance to capture a moment. This photo is a great example of that. I saw the children waving at me at the Marmara Sea coast and immediately turned my camera towards them and had time to take just one shot. As they say, luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. This photo has so many compositional elements, symmetry, diagonal lines, parallel lines, adjacent similar visual elements, texture, contrast, and gesture making it a favorite photograph.
"Marmara" - During a cold November late afternoon flight I saw the solitary little fishing boat on my left side lightly ploughing through the calm Marmara Sea and the pinkish sunlight reflection coming through a slit in the clouds.
